DNA Workshop (Beginner to Intermediate Level
This workshop covers interpreting DNA results at Ancestry, FamilyTreeDNA, and 23andMe. It also covers GEDMatch and has a hands-on exercise. This DNA workshop will include the following presentations.
Attendees are encouraged to have autosomal DNA testing done with at least one of the following companies before the workshop–AncestryDNA, FamilyTreeDNA, 23andMe, or MyHeritage–to get the most out of this workshop.
- Interpreting Your Ancestry DNA Results: Ancestry has the largest database of people tested, helpful tools for analyzing your DNA test results, and many family trees posted by people who've tested. Learn how to interpret your DNA results from Ancestry.
- Interpreting Your FamilyTree and 23andMeDNA Results: Learn the ins and outs of understanding your DNA results from FamilyTree DNA (FTDNA) and 23andMe. Each company has unique tools for interpreting DNA test results and reviewing your DNA matches.
- Using GEDMatch for Analyzing DNA Results and Finding New DNA Matches: GEDMatch is a free, third-party website offering additional tools to interpret your DNA results. It accepts DNA test results from DNA testing companies like Ancestry, FTDNA, 23andMe, and MyHeritage. Thus, it can be a great way to find new matches. Learn how to use this helpful website.
- Case Study–Putting the Pieces Together to Break Through a Brick Wall: Although TV makes it look easy, working through DNA results can be very complicated. This exercise will go through the steps needed to break through a brick wall in your family tree.
